Delaware Swimmers & Divers Open Season Saturday, Host Georgetown in Dual at Rawstrom Natatorium
October 7, 2011
NEWARK, Del. -- The winter athletics schedule for the University of Delaware will officially begin Saturday when the Blue Hen men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams host Georgetown University in a dual meet at Rawstrom Natatorium in Carpenter Sports Building at 12 noon.
Delaware swept the Hoyas last season with the UD men winning 183-107 and the women posting a 165-127 victory.
The Blue Hen men welcome back 13 letterwinners from last year’s squad that posted an 11-1 record and placed third at the Colonial Athletic Association championship. Head coach John Hayman, who will begin his 23rd year at the UD post, has seen his squads put together five straight winning seasons and four straight campaigns with 10 or more dual victories.
Delaware is led by junior Ryan Roberts, who earned the team Most Valuable Player award last season when he captured the CAA 200-yard backstroke title and was part of the champion 400 freestyle relay that also included current UD sophomore Paul Gallagher. Roberts also placed in the top four in three other events and was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 800 freestyle relay.
Other top returning swimmers for the Hens are Matt McCarthy, who placed second in the 200 backstroke at the CAA meet a year ago, Josh Hyman, who finished second in the 200 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 breaststroke, and Cole Clark, who was second in the 200 medley relay and third in the 100 butterfly.
The Delaware women return 15 letterwinners from last year’s team that went 8-6 and placed seventh at the CAA championships. The Hens have now posted 10 straight winning dual meet seasons under Hayman.
Leading the way for the Blue Hen women are senior Stephanie Dodd and Courtney Raw (at right). Dodd placed fifth in the 800 freestyle relay a year ago at the CAA meet while Raw was fourth in the 100 backstroke and went on to earn the team’s Most Valuable Player award.
