Delaware Swimmers Swept by William & Mary in Final Dual Meet; Facchine Wins Two Events for Hens

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimmers managed to win just three events each on the day as host William & Mary swept the Blue Hens in Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday at the Rec Center Pool.
Both Delaware teams were competing in their final dual meet of the season as the Blue Hens now prepare for the CAA Championships to be held Feb. 22-25 at George Mason University.
The William & Mary men (4-4, 3-1 CAA) posted a 152-110 victory over Delaware (5-4, 1-4 CAA) while the Blue Hen women (6-4, 2-4 CAA) fell to the Tribe women by a score of 177-85. William & Mary improved to 7-5 (4-2 CAA). There was no diving competition held.
Delaware senior co-captain Hannah Facchine (at right) was the only double winner on the day for the Blue Hens as she captured both the 100 breaststroke (1:05.41) and 200 breaststroke (2:22.12) events and also added a second place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:47.90).
Sophomore Megan Northshield added the other Delaware women’s victory as she captured the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:05.17 and also added a third place showing in the 400 individual medley (4:36.91). Also for the UD women, Courtney Raw was second in the 100 backstroke (57.75) and teamed with Facchine, Maggie Tracy, and Tori Gillespie for a second place showing in the 200 medley relay (1:47.90), Amy Stelmaszyk was second in the 200 butterfly (2:08.71), and Stephanie Dodd was runner-up in the 400 individual medley (4:34.32).
On the men’s side, Delaware got victories from Matthew McCarthy in the 200 backstroke (1:51.74), Josh Hyman in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.80), and from the 400 freestyle relay team of Kyle McLaughlin, Nick Woomer, Ryan Roberts, and Paul Gallagher in 3:07.36.
McCarthy was also second in the 100 backstroke (51.94), Hyman was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke (58.35) and 200 medley relay (1:34.25), Gallagher was second in the 100 freestyle (47.28), Woomer was second in the 200 medley relay, and Roberts was second in the 200 freestyle (1:43.00), 500 freestyle (4:44.63), and 200 medley relay.
Also for the Delaware men, Jacob Magnan was second in both the 1,000 freestyle (9:49.42) and 400 individual medley (4:14.81), Zach Lowe was second in the 200 butterfly (1:54.51), and Cole Clark was second in the 100 butterfly (52.78)
