Delaware Swimmers & Divers Capture Four Firsts, Eight Seconds at CAA Pod Meet

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams combined to capture four first place finishes and eight second place showings as hosts of the two-day Colonial Athletic Association Pod Meet that concluded Sunday at Delaware’s Rawstrom Pool.
Delaware hosted men’s and women’s teams from UNC Wilmington and William & Mary and the women’s team from James Madison. It was Delaware’s first competition since Oct. 13 as the Blue Hens’ had an off-week on Oct. 20 and the Oct. 27 dual vs. Old Dominion was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy.
The Delaware women went 1-2 during the meet as the Hens defeated UNCW 200-153 but fell to James Madison 231-117 and to William & Mary 194-153. On the men’s side, Delaware went 0-2 as the Hens suffered setbacks of 217-136 to UNCW and 191-156 to William & Mary. The UNCW men have won each of the last 11 CAA Championship titles while James Madison is the defending CAA champion on the women’s side.
The Blue Hens got big efforts out of their divers as Luke Winkler (3-meter) and Brian Coonce (1-meter) each captured men’s titles with Winkler also taking a second in the 1-meter and Patrick McCann taking second in the three-meter.
The other Delaware champions during the meet were Ryan Roberts winning the men’s freestyle (1:41.69) and Amy Stelmaszyk taking the women’s 200 butterfly crown (2:07.77).
The Blue Hen men also got second place finishes from the 400 freestyle relay team of Sihan Liu, Matthew Marquez, Roberts, and Paul Gallagher (3:06.46), Roberts in the 200 backstroke (1:49.70), Alex Tooley in the 400 individual medley (4:07.84), and Zachary Lowe in the 200 butterfly (1:55.76). Roberts was also third in both the 200 medley relay (1:34.44) and 100 backstroke (51.92) while Paul Gallagher was third in the 100 freestyle (46.69) and 200 medley relay (1:34.44).
The Delaware women’s also got second place showings from the 400 freestyle relay unit of Dominique Montoya, Maggie Tracy, Courtney Raw, and Morgan Whyte (3:32.93), and from Megan Northshield in the 200 butterfly (2:08.85). Raw also placed third in the 200 medley relay (1:48.06), 100 backstroke (58.25), and 200 backstroke (2:06.37) while Kaitlin Wolla was third in the 200 medley relay (1:48.06) and 200 butterfly (2:09.33) and diver Kristina Congdon was third in both the 1-meter (262.05 points) and 3-meter (270.55) events.
Both Delaware teams will return to action next Saturday, Nov. 10, as the Blue Hens host Rider and La Salle in a tri-meet at Rawstrom Pool.
