Delaware Sinks Georgetown in Season-Opening Dual Meet; Raw, Pate, Whyte Lead Way for Blue Hens

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams enjoyed an outstanding start to the 2012-13 season Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens picked up 26 first place finishes and easily swept Georgetown University in non-league action at the Rawstrom Natatorium.

The Delaware men won 12 races on their way to a 209-88 victory while the Blue Hen women registered 14 first place finishes and posted a 223-77 victory.

Multiple winners were plentiful on the day for the Blue Hens as Ryan Roberts and Paul Gallagher each won four events on the men’s side and Courtney Raw (at right) was in on four first place finishes on the women’s side.

Raw won the 100 backstroke (58.69) and 200 backstroke (2:07.48) and teamed with Emily Pate, Kaitlin Wolla, and Morgan Whyte to win the 200 medley relay (1:47.88) and with Dominique Montoya, Whyte, and Maggie Tracy to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:36.98).

Roberts won the 100 backstroke in 51.03 and the 200 backstroke in 1:52.19 and teamed with Clayton Clemens, Gallagher, and Cole Clark to win the 200 medley relay in 1:35.02 and with Gallagher, Michael Moore, and Sihan Liu to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:10.19). Gallagher added victories in the 50 freestyle (21.72) and 100 freestyle (47.35) to his slate.

Also for the UD men, Alex Tooley captured the 200 breaststroke (2:13.78) and 200 individual medley (1:57.31), Liu won the 200 freestyle (1:44.57), Andrew Speese won the 200 butterfly (1:55.02), Clark won the 100 butterfly (51.80), and Patrick McCann won the three-meter diving (264.67 points) and was second in the one-meter diving (228.37). Tooley also was second in the 1,000 freestyle (9:45.31) and Liu was second in the 100 freestyle (48.38).

Also for the UD women, Solt won the 200 freestyle (1:56.86), 500 freestyle (5:11.56), and 1,000 freestyle (10:32.63), Pate won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.78), 200 breaststroke (2:30.87), and 200 medley relay, Wolla won the 200 butterfly (2:10.13), Whyte captured the 50 freestyle (24.46), Montoya won the 100 freestyle (54.46), Kristina Congdon was the winner of the one-meter diving (252.27 points) and Caitlin Stockwell claimed the three-meter diving title (253.20 points).

Wolla was also second in the 100 butterfly (58.99) while Stockwell was second in the one-meter dive (221.25 points) and Congdon was runner-up in the three-meter diving event (221.25 points).

Delaware will return to action Oct. 13 when they travel to Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason and the site of the 2013 CAA Championships.
