Delaware Men’s & Women’s Swimming Teams Post 13 First-Place Finishes in New Year’s Day Relay in Largo, Florida

LARGO, Fla. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams rang in 2013 with combined to capture 13 first-place finishes at a Relay Meet Monday afternoon in a non-conference meet in Largo, Florida.
The Blue Hens men’s and women’s swimming teams squared off against Gannon University, William Jewell College and Penn State-Behrend participated in the relay meet that did not count in the 2012-13 standings.
Delaware’s men’s captured victories in all six events at the relay. In the 200 medley relay team of Ryan Roberts, Tyler Szarko, Cole Clark and Paul Gallagher won with a time of 1:38.30. The 300 medley relay team of Tim West, A.J. Panaccione and Zachary Lowe won with a time of 2:47.40. The 150 backstroke relay team of Matt McCarthy, Roberts and Tim Ware won with a time of 1:14.00. The 150 butterfly relay team of Lowe, Andrew Speese and Clark posted a time of 1:12.21 en route to the victory. Alexander Tooley, Connor McGarvey and Szarko registered a time of 1:27.80 in the 150 breaststroke relay victory. Delaware notched a win in the 200 freestyle relay behind the team of Gallagher, Clark, Kyle McLaughlin and Roberts with a time of 1:30.90.
The Blue Hen women’s swimming team posted five victories in the six-event relays; the 200 medley relay team of Courtney Raw, Calli Marando, Kaitlin Wolla and Maggie Tracy won with a time of 1:39.77, the 300 medley relay team of Raw, Alyssa Sanders and Brittany Lazear won with a time of 1:26.20, the 150 butterfly relay team of Wolla, Amy Stelmaszyk and Laura Askin posted a time of 1:24.60, the 150 breaststroke relay team of Montoya, Mackenzie Howarth and Lauren Ahrens registered a time of 1:39.60 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Raw, Tracy Montoya and MaryKathryn Harris tallied a time of 1:42.00.
Rounding out the top three finishes for the men were five, second-place finishes in the 200 medley relay team of Michael Moore, Tooley, Speese and McLaughlin (1:39.67), 300 medley relay team of McCarthy, Szarko and Tooley (2:52.92), 150 backstroke relay team of Panaccione, Moore and Gallagher (1:15.96), 150 butterfly relay team of Moore, Ware and McLauglin (1:13.47) and 200 freestyle relay team of West, Garrett Sharesky, McCarthy and McGarvey (1:31.43). The 200 medley relay team of Panaccione, McGarvey, Lucas Kuriga and Sharesky tallied the only third-place finish for the Blue Hen men with a time of 1:43.35.
UD’s women completed the top three finishes with five second-place finishes; 300 medley relay team of Howarth, Ahrens and Shea Solt posted a time of 3:14.70, the 150 backstroke relay team of Brown, Whyte and Ahrens registered a time of 1:31.31, the 150 butterfly relay team of Megan Northshield, Harris and Joanna Baird earned a time of 1:26.25, the 150 breaststroke relay team of Hailey Farrell, Marnando and Jamie Kane posted a time of 1:40.61 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Askin, Morgan Whyte, Sanders and Lesley Payonk registered a time of 1:42.78. The Blue Hen women added three third place finishes; the 200 medley relay team of Sanders Farrell, Stelmaszyk and Harris earned a time of 1:57.07, the 300 medley relay team of Marando, Kane and Brown added a time of 3:16.90 and the 150 backstroke relay team of Payonk, Solt and Tracy earned a time of 1:33.18.
The Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to action next week when the Blue Hens travel to Philadelphia and will battle Drexel University on Saturday, January 12 at 12:00 p.m. in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet.
