Northshield, Montoya Set School Records as Delaware Places Sixth at CAA Championships Finale

FAIRFAX Va. – On the final day of the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday night, the University of Delaware men’s and women’s teams combined for 14 Top 10 finishes and established four school records at George Mason’s Jim McKay Natatorium.

The Delaware men finished the four-day competition with a fourth place finish with a score of 382 points while the women were sixth with 221 points.

Both Delaware teams improved their showings from last year when the Blue Hen men placed fifth overall and the women placed eighth.

Ryan Roberts' second place finish in the 200 backstroke led the UD men while Megan Northshield led the women with a seventh place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:03.90).

Roberts swam to a time of 1:45.23 to break his own school record of 1:46.71 in the 200 backstroke. It was also the second best time in conference history and was an NCAA B provisional qualifying time.

The two-time defending CAA champion in the 200 backstroke, Roberts capped his conference career by finishing in the top three in that event all four years.

Northshield also set a new school record as her time of 2:03.19 in the 200 butterfly preliminaries bettered the mark of 2:03.26 set by Sara Stephens set in 2004-05.

Also setting school records were Matthew Marquez in the 200 butterfly and Dominique Montoya (at right) in the 100 freestyle.

Marquez swam to a time of 1:49.66 in the preliminaries to break the record of 1:50.59 by Andrew Speese in 2009-10 while Montoya swam to a time of 51.28 in the 100 freestyle finals to break the UD mark of 51.79 by Sara Begley in 2008-09.

The two-time defending CAA champion in the 200 backstroke, Roberts capped his conference career by finishing in the top three in that event all four years..

UNCW claimed its 12th straight CAA men's team title title with a score of 674.5. William & Mary was second (633.5) followed by George Mason (591), Delaware (382), Drexel (335.5), and Towson (298).

For the fifth time in the last six seasons, Towson claimed the CAA women's team crown as the Tigers posted a score of 783.5. James Madison was second (735.5) followed by William & Mary (496), Northeastern (287), Delaware (221), Drexel (212), and George Mason (208).

Matthew McCarthy produced a fourth place finish in the 200 backstroke (1:47.31) for Delaware while Tim Ware added a fifth place showing in the 200 backstroke (1:47.32).

Paul Gallagher posted a sixth place finish in the 100 freestyle (45.00) while the 400 freestyle relay team of Gallagher, McCarthy, Matthew Marquez, and Roberts also finished in sixth place (3:02.70).

Marquez also was eighth in the 200 butterfly (1:50.57) and ninth in the 200 backstroke (1:48.23), Andrew Speese finished 10th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:49.21, Justin Kolwyck was 13th in the 1,650 freestyle (15:57.84), Zachary Lowe was 16th in the 200 butterfly (1:50.44), and Garrett Sharesky was 16th in the 1,650 freestyle (16:13.90).

In the three-meter diving competition, Brian Coonce placed third with a score of 279.05 and Patrick McCann was fourth (270.75). With a score of 227.49, Luke Winkler added an eight place showing for the Blue Hens.

On the women's side, the 400 freestyle relay team of Montoya, Maggie Tracy, Mary Kay Harris, and Morgan Whyte finished eighth with a time of 3:27.82.

Montoya also added a 12th place finish in her record-breaking performance in the 100 freestyle (51.28), Hailey Farrell posted a 13th place finish in the 1,650 freestyle (17:01.25), Amy Stelmaszyk was 15th in the 200 butterfly (2:05.98), Courtney Raw was 16th in the 200 backstroke (2:03.80), and Kaitlin Wolla was 16th in the 200 butterfly (2:07.08).
