Carnall named Colonial Athletic Association Singles Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. -- A pair of University of Delaware Tennis players have been named Colonial Athletic Association Players of the Week for the first time this season, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Junior Samantha Carnall (at right) was named the women’s single Player of the Week, while freshman Troy Beneck collected the same honor on the men’s side.
In the weekly doubles honors, UNC Wilmington swept the plaudits, as Kinshuk Sharma and Chris Cooprider earned the men’s honor, while Olga Blank and Angie Sekely picked up the women’s.
Carnall, who hails from Hatfield, Mass., notched her 70th career win on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-2 win over George Mason’s Lindsay Gray in the third set. Carnall and doubles partner Megan Doran continued to improve on their school record for double victories, going 2-0 last week.
The pair was the lone Blue Hen victory against Temple University on Tuesday, cruising past Jordan Batey and Thersea Stangl 8-3. On Sunday, the Hens logged their second win of the week and helped Delaware win 6-1 over Mason. Doran and Carnall won their 22nd match of the season 8-4 over the Patriots’ Gray and Kiersten Pappas.
Beneck went 2-0 in singles action last week, including a 6-3, 6-2 win over Phil Law in No. 2 singles, collecting one of two Delaware points against No. 63 University of Pennsylvania. Beneck collected his second win of the week against George Mason University’s Kevin McMillen, going 6-2, 6-2 and helping Delaware to a 5-2 win over the Patriots.
The Wilmington, Del. native also went 2-0 last week with doubles partner Andre Vorobyov. The pair defeated Penn’s Hicham Laalej and Zach Katz 8-6, followed up by an 8-3 victory over Mason’s Jorge Osuna and Jordan Borsanyi.
The women’s team is scheduled to return to CAA action on Thursday as it hosts Towson University at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts, beginning at 3 p.m. Both teams will take on near-by Drexel University, also at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts, on Saturday afternoon, with the first action set for noon.
