Ripoll Comes Back Again As Blue Hens Down Drexel 4-3, Petrich Ties Singles Record

NEWARK, Del. -- Senior women’s tennis player Montse Ripoll logged a win in the sixth flight in comeback fashion to give the University of Delaware a 4-3 over Drexel University on Friday afternoon at Delaware Field House Tennis Courts.

Not only did the Blue Hens get the final point from Ripoll, but fellow senior Ivana Petrich (at right) tied the University’s all-time singles victory record, logging her 74th career win.

Petrich, who defeated Emma Brook 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth flight, is now tied for first all-time at Delaware with Erin Kamen, who went 74-13 from 1996-2000.

Petrich will go for the outright record on Sunday as the Blue Hens host Johns Hopkins University at the Delaware Field House Tennis Courts, beginning with singles action at noon.

Delaware, which improved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, got the victory on the shoulder of Ripoll, who lost the first set 3-6, but rallied back with the support of the entire team to take the second set 6-3 and the third set 6-0.

The Blue Hens have now won their 17th straight match over the Dragons, who are now 8-7 overall and 2-2 in the CAA. Delaware is now 26-2 all-time against Drexel.

In the first flight, Megan Doran picked up won her 12th match of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gozde Unkaya in the first flight to collect Delaware’s only other singles point.

Freshman Olivia Heim was up 6-5 in a first set tiebreaker before rolling her ankle and was forced to retire in the fifth flight.

Doubles action was exciting as Drexel’s Sonja Stosic and Zeynep Mafa squeeked by Doran and partner Samantha Carnall 8-5. But the Blue Hens answered with Safron and Ripoll in the second flight, cruising to an 8-1 win over Elise Leizerovich and Emma Brook.

Delaware won the doubles point as Petrich and her doubles partner Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom grabbed the third-flight win 8-6 against Unkaya and Bell.
