NORFOLK, Va. – Despite a doubles victory from Ivana Petrich and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom, the University of Delaware women’s tennis team could not keep its season going, falling the quarterfinals of the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan Colonial Athletic Association tournament.

The sixth-seeded Hens faltered against No. 2 Georgia State University, suffering a 4-0 loss on Friday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center, located on the campus of host Old Dominion University.

Georgia State, which is currently No. 65 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, advances to the semifinals to face No. 2 Virginia Commonwealth University on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Delaware (13-5 overall) struck first, taking the third flight of doubles as Petrich (at right) and Sjoberg-Sundstrom blanked Kir Kemp and Othilia Lindqvist 8-0.

But that would be the last Delaware win of the season, as Georgia State collected the doubles point with wins in the first and second flight.

Megan Doran concluded her Blue Hen career as the all-time winningest doubles player, but that was not enough as she and current doubles partner Samantha Carnall fell 8-3 to Abigail Tere Apisah and Maryna Kozachenko.

In the second flight, Dorothy Safron and Montse Ripoll, this week’s CAA Doubles Team of the Week, suffered an 8-4 loss to Tereza Lerova and Katerina Gresova.

Sjoberg-Sundstrom was just two games away from collecting a point in the sixth flight, leading Martina Ondrackova 6-2 in the first and up 4-0 in the second. But Georgia State had already won three singles matches to secure the win.
