University of Delaware Women Drop First Match of Season, Fall to Maryland 7-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Delaware women’s tennis squad suffered its first setback of the season, dropping a 7-0 decision to host University of Maryland Saturday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park.
The Terrapins, ranked No. 58 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, won all three doubles matches and swept all six singles matches to win their third straight match and improve to 8-2. Earlier in the day, Maryland knocked off California (Pa.) by a 6-1 score.
Delaware suffered its first dual match loss of the season, falling to 3-1 on the season and snapping a four-match win streak that dated back to last season.
Maryland won all six singles matches in straight sets, winning 72 of the 91 games. Delaware’s Montse Ripoll (at right) had the most success for the Hens as she fell to Jordaan Hansbrough 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.
The Terps also won 24 of the 28 games in doubles. Delaware’s No. 2 duo of Samantha Carnall and Megan Doran lost 8-3 to Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus.
Delaware will return to action March 6 at Navy in Annapolis, Md.
