Women’s Tennis Knocks Off Navy 5-2, Carnall and Doran Tied for First All-Time in Doubles Wins

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- – The pairing of pairing of Megan Doran and Samantha Carnall won their 34th career doubles match together, tying them for first all-time in the history of the University of Delaware women’s tennis program.
The pair’s 8-4 win in the first flight helped Delaware defeat Navy 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Brigade Sports Complex.
Doran and Carnall (at right) are now tied all-time with Susan Pollack and Amanda Campbell, who finished with a doubles record of 34-8 from 2005-07. Doran and Carnall are now 34-7, including 10-2 this season.
The Blue Hen pair will have a chance to set the record in Delaware next match on March 13 when the Hen host Goldey Beacom at the Elkton Indoor Courts. Action is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
The match was the first time Delaware and the Mids have squared off since Delaware’s program began in 1973.
Delaware, which improved 4-1 on the season and got its first win since suffering a 7-0 setback against 58th-ranked Maryland on Feb. 26.
Doran and Carnall defeated Amanda Griffin and Erin Snook in the first flight of doubles, while Dorothy Safron and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom won the third flight 8-2 to help Delaware capture the doubles point.
In singles action, Safron won her second flight match over Emani Decquir 6-0, 6-2. In the fourth flight, Ivana Petrich tallied her 70th career singles win with a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Darien Sears. Petrich, who is in sole possession of third-place all-time, is just four wins shy of tying the career singles victory mark of 74, set by Erin Kamen from 1996-2000.
Freshman Olivia Heim earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Snook. Heim is now tied for seventh for singles wins in her rookie season, improving to 18-4. Heim is nine singles wins from teammate Amanda Halstrom, who holds the freshman record of 27 wins, set last season.
Montse Ripoll collected her 40th career win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory of Brittney Boucher. Ripoll has a career record of 40-15 since transferring to Delaware from Palm Beach Atlantic University.
