ELKTON, Md.-- Doubles partners Samantha Carnall and Megan Doran made University of Delaware women’s tennis history Sunday night when they won their 35th doubles match.
The pair of Hens swept their opponents, Vanessa Leon and Blanca Sancho of Goldey Beacom College, winning 8-0 en route to a 7-0 Delaware win over the Lightning.
Carnall and Doran have a career record of 35-7, amassing the record win total in just two seasons. Amanda Campbell and Susan Pollack set the previous mark of 34-8 from 2005-07.
Delaware, which improved to 5-1 on the season, won its fourth match of the season with a 7-0 result.
The Hens collected the doubles point, getting a win in the first flight from Ivana Petrich and Montse Ripoll over Blanca Sales and Gabriella Chaves. The match needed a tiebreaker before declaring Petrich and Ripoll the winner, 9-8 (3). Dorothy Safron and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom rounded out Delaware’s doubles wins with an 8-1 victory over Marie-Louise Klein and Laura Cure Peters.
Senior Ivana Petrich moved one step closer to the top of the singles wins record, getting her 71st career victory, a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Melanie Bonomo. She is now just three wins shy of the University’s record of 74 wins and is now just two wins shy of head coach Laura Travis’ career mark of 73-12.
The team’s two other seniors, Doran and Ripoll, won their singles matches as well. Doran knocked off Sancho 6-1, 6-1 in the first fight, while Ripoll won her sixth flight match 6-3, 6-1 over Chaves.
Carnall did not drop a set the entire match, getting a 6-0, 6-0 win in the third flight over Sales. Carnall climbed up the career wins record book as well, improving to 67-16, tying Pollack, who went 67-28, in fifth place all-time.
Heim won her 19th match as a freshman, knocking off Cure Peters 6-0, 6-1 in the fifth flight. Heim is now just eight wins shy of the rookie wins record of 27, set by teammate Amanda Halstrom last season. Another freshman, Safron, won her match 6-2, 6-1 over Klein in the second flight.
Next up for the Blue Hens will be Hofstra University as Delaware opens Colonial Athletic Association play. Match time is set for 1 p.m. on March 20 in Hempstead, N.Y.
