NORFOLK, Va. --Two matches into a weeklong trip in Virginia, the University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams each collected 7-0 wins over host Norfolk State University on Tuesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.

Both teams bounced back from set backs yesterday against Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion Univeristy. The Monarchs dropped the men’s side 6-1 and defeated the women’s 7-0.

The men improve to 6-4 and halt a two game slide as the women’s team won its fourth match 7-0 this season, improving to 6-2 on the year.

On the women’s side, two players got 6-0, 6-1 win in singles. In the third flight, Samantha Carnall defeated Naeemah Brooks while Ivana Petrich got by Chenge Tsapayi in the fourth flight.

Both Carnall and Petrich move one win closer to the top of the record books. Petrich won the 72nd singles match of her career while Carnall collected her 69th. The all-time mark is 74, held by Erin Kamen from 1996-00.

Petrich is now just one win shy of tying Delaware head coach Laura Travis, the Laura LeRoy. Travis won 73 matches during her Blue Hen career from 1985-89.

Megan Doran picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jennifer Astbury in the first flight while freshman Dorothy Safron collected the 19th win of her career 6-1, 6-2 against Gabrielle Jonsson.

Fellow freshman Olivia Heim notched her 21st victory, moving her to within six of the all-time rookie wins mark of 27, set by teammate Amanda Halstrom last season. Heim won 6-2, 6-1 over Rebecca Graff.

In the sixth flight, Montse Ripoll won 6-1, 6-3 against Maryna Kariuk, the 43rd win of Ripoll’s career.

Delaware got through the doubles action relatively unscathed.  Safron and Ripoll paired up for an 8-0 win over Astbury and Graff, while Doran and Carnall continued to pile on the wins with an 8-2 victory against Jonsson and Brooks.  Petrich and her doubles partner, Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom took out Tsapayi and Kariuk 8-3.

For the men, Chris Hincker moved yet another win closer to Delaware’s all-time mark, picking up his 68-career singles win with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Christian Romanzini in the fourth flight. Hincker is just two wins away from tying the all-time mark of 70, set by Austin Longacre from 2006-10.

Jeff Marshall also had a 6-1, 6-1 win in the fifth flight over Kent Austin. Ryan Kent picked up a 6-2, 6-1 sixth flight victory against Brian Bullock, while Courtney Scott earned a 6-4, 6-4 against Norfolk’s first flighter Aresnio Culver.

Troy Beneck and Andre Vorobyov rounded out the singles victories. Beneck defeated Ben Marks 6-4, 6-2 in the second flight while Vorobyov went 6-1, 6-1 over Jonathan Sessom in the third flight.

Kent and doubles partner Robbie Kay won their 16th match this season as a pair, just two off the single season wins mark for a doubles pair.  Kent and Kay’s 8-5 win over Austin and Bullock brings the Hens partnership just two short of the 18-3 mark set by Jeff Dumansky and Jeff Olmstead in 1973-74.

Beneck and Vorobyov brought home an 8-3 win in the first flight over Culver and Romanzini as Scott and Hincker picked up their 39th career doubles victory.

The women’s team returns to action on Thursday when they take on UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m. That CAA match up will be played at Old Dominion University’s Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Courts.

The men are idle until Friday when they take on James Madison University at 1 p.m.  That game will also be played at Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Courts.
