Men’s and Women’s Tennis Conclude Fall Season at ITA Regionals

NORFOLK, Va. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s tennis teams capped the fall portion of the their schedule this past weekend at their respective ITA Regional tournaments.

The men played at the University of Virginia while the women competed in Norfolk, Va. at Old Dominion University.

On the women’s side, Samantha Carnall (at right) fell in the singles main draw to eventual quarterfinalist and Colonial Athletic Association foe Alex Bara of VCU 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles action, Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom partnered up with Dorothy Safron to face Marshall’s Kristina Kopricina and Kara Kucin. The Hen pair fell in a tight 9-7 match.

On the opposite portion of the bracket, Carnell teamed with freshman Christina Harrington, but the Delaware group slipped 8-6 against Howard University’s Brittney Morgan and Katelyn Stokes.

In the singles qualifying bracket, Dorothy Safron dropped her initial match but went three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Howard’s Morgan.

For the men, sophomore Troy Beneck and sophomore transfer Adam Lawton, playing together for the first season for the University of Delaware men’s tennis team, reached the Round of 32 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regionals, hosted by the University of Virginia this past weekend.

The Blue Hen pair, which went into the tournament 6-1, grabbed their seventh win of the season, in the Round of 64, dropping Duquesne University’s Aram Abgaryan and Pete Carpenter 8-4 to reach the Round of 32.

In the next round however, the Blue Hen walked over, allowing Drew Courtney and Julen Uriguen, the third-seeded team from UVA.

Both squads are idle until 2012 when the women take on Saint Joseph’s on Feb. 18 and the men face the Hawks on Feb. 25. Both matches will begin at 6 p.m. on their respective dates at the Elkton Indoor Tennis Club.
