TOWSON, Md. -- Senior University of Delaware women’s tennis standout Samantha Carnall logged her 76th career singles win this weekend while going 3-0 in singles play at the Towson University Invitational.

Carnall (at right) surpassed former teammate Ivana Petrich, who graduated in May, for the all-time mark which Petrich set at 75 to cap her outstanding career at Delaware.

Carnall opened her senior campaign with three wins, including a pair of 6-0, 6-3 wins. She defeated Aurora Davis of Saint Joseph’s and Lindsay Raulston from Mary Washington University by the same score. Carnall’s third win came 7-5, 6-3 against George Washington’s Mimi Hamling.

Senior Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom, now in her second year at Delaware after transferring from Detroit Mercy College, got some work in at both singles and doubles. Sjoberg-Sundstrom picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over host Towson’s Nani Lizana. She paired with Dorothy Safron to defeat Mary Washington’s Alexandra Ritter and Cassie Bowman 6-2, 6-2.

Olivia Heim partnered with Sjoberg-Sundstrom to get an extra-set victory over George Washington’s Leah Pascarella and Lorena Valente 6-2, 5-7, 13-11. Carnall played with freshman Christina Harrington to pick up a win over Nisha Shah and Calley Easdale 6-0, 6-3.

Several newcomers got experience this weekend, including Harrington, who nabbed a pair of singles wins. She nearly swept Saint Joseph’s Tara Walsh 6-1, 6-0 followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win over Casey Malcolm of Mary Washington.

Kimberly Milla, a freshman, got her first victory as a Blue Hen 6-0, 6-1 against Micaela Dowd of Mary Washington. Milla paired up with Heim for a 6-2, 6-1 doubles win over Kelly Mulquin and Kate Dowd from Saint Joseph’s.

Dorothy Safron won her first match of the year in a nail-biting fashion, defeating Lauren Roy form Saint Joseph’s 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Safron also posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Towson’s Andrew Samlin.

Heim joined Safron in victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Mary Washington’s Michelle Meadows.

Carnall will have a chance at the record on Sept. 23-25 when the Hens head to Philadelphia to partake in the Cissie Leary Tournament, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The all-day event will take place at the Levy Tennis Pavilion.
