athlete photoNORFOLK, Va. – University of Delaware senior Samantha Carnall has earned a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Tennis All-Conference team for the first time as she was selected to the singles second team.

The all-conference teams were announced at the CAA banquet on Thursday evening, following the first day of action in the league tournament. The seventh-seeded Blue Hens opened the first round with a 4-0 shut out victory over No. 10 Hofstra Thursday morning.

Georgia State sophomore Abigail Tere-Apisah was selected as the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association women’s tennis Player of the Year by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Also receiving top women’s tennis honors from the conference were Old Dominion freshman Aleksandra Mitrovska and UNCW freshman Alyssa Ritchie, who shared

CAA Co-Rookie of the Year accolades. UNCW head coach Jenny Garrity was named the CAA Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

Carnall, who hails from Hatfield, Mass., finished the regular season with a dominant 18-3 overall singles record, including an 11-3 mark in the top flight. Prior to the start of the CAA tournament, she amassed a 91-28 as a four-year member of the Blue Hens.

Even more impressive, Carnall became the all-time singles wins leader in the Blue Hen record book as she surpassed 75 singles victories in just her second win this season. She surpassed the mark of 75 wins previously held by Ivana Petrich, who was a member of the Delaware squad from 2007-11.

Carnall and the Blue Hens will look for their first-ever CAA quarterfinals victory as Delaware takes on third-seeded UNCW (14-6) at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Old Dominion University’s Folkes-Stevens Center Tennis Courts.
