Delaware’s Nataliya Naumova Advances to USTA BJK NTC Women’s College Invitational Quarterfinals

athlete photoFlushing, N.Y. – Freshman Nataliya Naumova (at right) led the University of Delaware women’s tennis team this past weekend as she finished 2-1 in singles play and advanced to the quarterfinals in her open flight at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Women’s College Invitational.

Naumova opened play in Flight G with a win over Fairleigh Dickinson’s Egzona Morina, who withdrew with an injury.  Naumova then took on Eva Sung from Army and fell in the first set, 4-6.  She rallied for the win, however, going 6-3 and 10-4 to proceed to the quarterfinals.

The Moscow, Russia native then fell in a tiebreaker to Cornell’s Sara Perelman, 6-4, 7-6(4).

In Flight A, freshman Danea Jonjic’ opened with a tight 6-3, 6-4 win over North Carolina State’s Rachel James-Baker.  The Split, Croatia native followed with two losses to finish weekend play.

The Blue Hens had two student-athletes in Flight D with freshman Carmen Lai and junior Dorothy Safron.  Each player went 1-2 in singles play.  Lai defeated Rutgers’ Linsday Balsamo, 6-3, 6-4 while Safron took a 6-2, 6-3 win over Maria Bernardez from Providence.

In doubles action, Lai and Safron teamed up to go 1-2 with a win against Dartmouth in Flight 2.  Jonjic’ and Naumova doubled up to also go 1-2 with their lone win coming in a 8-3 victory over St. John’s in Flight 4.

Delaware travels next weekend to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Lehigh Tournament.
