Jonjic’, Lai and Safron Compete at USTA/ITA Northeast Regional

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The University of Delaware women’s tennis team wrapped up their fall season as they sent three of their student-athletes to the USTA/ITA Division I Women’s Northeast Regional Championships this past weekend at Army in junior Dorothy Safron (at right) and freshmen Danea Jonjic’ and Carmen Lai.
Safron picked up the lone win for the Blue Hens against the top players in the region from 46 Division I schools.. She opened with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Fordham’s Angie Dabu. Ioana Alecsiu (Columbia) then defeated Safron, 6-3, 6-4, to advance in the tournament.
In the same bracket, Lai fell in a close match to Harvard’s Natalie Blosser, 7-5, 6-2.
Jonjic’ also lost in a close one, 6-3, 6-3, to host Army’s Jamila Paul.
Lai and Safron teamed up for doubles action and took on NJIT. The Highlanders came out on top by a score of 9-7.
Delaware takes the next few weeks off before opening their spring slate in search of the first Colonial Athletic Association championship in team history on January 27 against Morgan State.
