Trio of Blue Hens Wrap Saint Joseph’s Invite With Winning Singles Records

athlete photoPHILADELPHIA -- Junior Dorothy Safron, sophomore Kim Milla and freshman Danea Jonjic’ (at right) each posted winning records this past weekend for the University of Delaware women’s tennis team at the Saint Joseph’s Invitational.

Safron entered the Flight 1 Singles with a bye and then cruised to two straight victories over Villanova’s Tori Smyth (6-0, 6-1) and Pittsburgh’s Molly Wickman (6-4, 6-0).

Jonjic’ also competed in the Singles Flight 1 and finished the afternoon with three wins.  Jonjic’ opened the competition with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Temple’s Maame Ama Osei and followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Villanova’s Mikelle Mancini.  She finished the day with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph of SJU’s Casey Robinson.

In her first match in the Flight 3 Singles, Milla fell to Bucknell’s Lydia Colvin by a score of 6-2, 6-2 before sailing through the consolation bracket.  Milla defeated three straight Saint Joseph’s competitors in Nicole Esposito (6-1, 6-2), Kelly Mulquin (6-3, 6-2) and Lauren Roy (6-3, 6-1).

Freshmen Carmen Lai and Nataliya Naumova also picked up wins on the day, each competing in the Singles Flight 2.  Lai opened with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lafayette’s Lucy Bass before falling to Bucknell’s Maria Cioffi in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.  Naumova defeated Lafayette’s Amanda Kusnierz by a score of 6-3, 6-3 and then lost to Saint Joseph’s Kristina Eisenbrand with a match of 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles action, Lai and Safron teamed up for a 4-0 record to win the Flight 1 title.  The duo defeated Villanova (8-1), Drexel (8-2), Bucknell (8-3) and Saint Joseph’s (8-4) to wrap up weekend play.

Milla joined junior Olivia Heim in Flight 2 Doubles play and finished 1-1 with a win against Saint Francis (8-0) before losing to Drexel (8-3).

The Blue Hens next compete in the Women’s Collegiate Invitational, held in Flushing Meadow, N.Y. October 6-8.
