ELKTON, Md. – It took three 10-set tiebreakers, but the University of Delaware women’s tennis squad picked up a 4-3 victory Saturday evening over Saint Joseph’s University at the Elkton Indoor Courts. The win was the Hens’ fourth straight, their best start since UD won four straight to open the 2010 season.
“Each player did what she set out to do in the beginning,” commented Delaware head coach Laura Travis. “In the end, it was good enough for the win.”
The Hens (4-0) fell early, dropping two close doubles matches to allow the Hawks (1-6) to take the team point.
Delaware then found themselves down 0-3 after the top two singles flights before they rallied back for the win.
Freshman Carmen Lai sparked the comeback with her three-set victory over Devi Jadeja. Lai fell in the first set, 4-6, and was down in the second before battling back to the 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 win. The triumph was her fourth straight of the year.
It also took three sets for fellow freshman Nataliya Naumova to grab her fourth straight win with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 victory over Kelly Mulguin.
Junior Olivia Heim (at top right) grabbed Delaware’s final three-set win with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 match against Lauren Roy.
Sophomore Kim Milla closed the door for the Blue Hens with a 6-1, 6-3 conquest over Arianne Polatnick for her team-best sixth straight win.
Delaware next takes on Navy March 6 at 2 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
