Delaware Sweeps Villanova, 7-0, Sunday at Elkton Indoor Courts

ELKTON, Md. – The University of Delaware women’s tennis team bounced
back from its first heartbreaking loss of the season with a 7-0 sweep of
Villanova University Sunday evening at the Elkton Indoor Courts.
“Many of the things we’ve been working on in practice shined through for each player today,” Delaware head coach Laura Travis stated. “Every day this squad is getting stronger, faster, and more mentally resilient.”
Delaware (5-1) opened the day with two doubles wins in the top flights
to pick up the team point. Dorothy Safron and Carmen Lai led off with
an 8-3 victory over Mikelle Mancini and Tori Smyth before Nataliya
Naumova and Kim Milla defeated Sydney West and Allison Kuse, 8-5.
In singles action, Safron swept West, 6-0, 6-0, for her first win in the third flight. Naumova followed with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 victory against Kuse in the four slot to improve to 10-7 on the year.
Olivia Heim moved to 8-3 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Amanda Nelson in No. 5 singles action.
In the two spot, Lai defeated Smyth, 6-1, 6-4, for her fourth win of the year while Danea Jonjic’ followed with a 6-4, 7-5 No. 1 singles victory over Mancini.
Milla wrapped up play for the Blue Hens with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Wesleigh Donadio to stay undefeated with a record of 4-0.
With the loss, Villanova drops to 3-5 for the year.
Delaware returns to the courts Thursday, Mar. 21, as the Hens travel to Annapolis, Md. for a 2 p.m. match against Navy as a make-up date from March 6. Delaware's match scheduled for this Tuesday, Mar. 19, has been canceled due to weather concerns and scheduling conflicts.
